WHITE'S active ingredient – Carbamide Peroxide – interacts inside your teeth’s pores to remove stains and return your smile to it’s natural beauty. Carbamide Peroxide follows the identical path of your teeth’s pores to remove stains caused by food, drinks and smoking. Because of the ingredient’s unique nature, it is able to penetrate the stain path and produce oxygen. The oxygen conversion whitens the entire tooth not just the surface resulting in a much whiter tooth that stays white longer. Because WHITE'S gel is thicker than other products, it successfully stays on the surface of the teeth during the whitening process. The gel’s effectiveness is maximized and the total treatment time is reduced. Within 1-2 weeks, you will have a whiter smile by following the easy 3 step process. WHITE’s gel is ph balanced naturalizing the acid content dramatically reducing the degree of tooth sensitivity associated with many other whitening products. Because WHITE’s ingredients are the highest quality USP (Unite States Pharmacopeias) you can whiten with confidence knowing you are using the safest most effective product available anywhere. Our # 1 selling item is the complete “At Home” tooth whitening system. It was developed by a dentist as a safe and effective way to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home for a fraction of the cost in the dental office. Each kit contains the following items: three syringes containing 5cc's each of the 16% or 22%Carbamide Peroxide whitening gel, three thermal form trays, a dental tray case and easy to follow instructions. Unlike most other whiteners that must be worn overnight, the White Professional Tooth Whitening System's tray need only be worn for two hours at a time because of the high concentration of Carbamide Peroxide, the gel's active ingredient White’s gel is available in 16% and 22% Carbamide Peroxide, the active ingredient that interacts inside the pores of your teeth to remove stains, thus returning your smile to its natural brilliance. Step One - Fitting Your Dental Tray Custom Fit Your Dental Tray – We recommend that only one tray can be worn at a time. Begin treatments on your upper teeth first and repeat the same process on your lower teeth. Preparing The Tray For Fitting – Boil water in a deep pot or microwave a cup of water for 2 minutes. Remove the water from the heat allowing boiling to completely stop. Holding onto the tab immerse one dental tray in the water for 4 seconds. Use a second hand watch for accurate timing. Use both hands to stabilize the tray while inserting it into your mouth. Be sure to keep the channels open as you guide it onto your teeth. CAUTION: Leaving the tray in the hot water for more than four seconds will case shrinkage and destroy the tray. Remove the dental tray. Immediately position the tray around your upper teeth. Be careful not to bend the edges of the “U” shape. The tray will be warm and can stick together. Fitting The Tray To Your Mouth’s Contour – Bite firmly into the tray. Close you lips and suck up while biting down. Apply pressure with your first three fingers of both hands to the tray’s front. This helps shape the tray to your mouth’s contour. Press your tongue on the roof of your mouth when forming the bottom trays. Remember to “close” your mouth as you create a sucking pressure, this will remove any excess air and water from the tray and helps form the tray to the teeth’s inside surface. For an accurate fit, all teeth should be covered. If need be, reheat the tray for 2-3 seconds to maximize flexibility and repeat the above process to ensure a correct fit. Remove the dental tray from your mouth and hold it in cold water for 30 seconds to harden. Step Two - Placing WHITE Gel in The Dental Tray Trimming The Tray – After the tray has hardened, place it in your mouth to ensure a comfortable fit. If all of your teeth are covered, trim the tab with scissors. Do not cut the tray while it is in your mouth. If too much of your gums are covered, carefully trim away excess. Be sure to not to cut too much because all of your teeth must be covered while whitening. Placing WHITE Gel In The Dental Tray – Your custom fitted dental tray should be dry before inserting white gel. Twist off the lear lock safety cap from the top of the 5cc syringe. Each treatment requires 1/2cc of WHITE gel. Holding your custom fitted dental tray, squeeze gel in areas that will touch the front surfaces of your teeth. Because WHITE gel is thicker than other products, there is little chance that the gel will over flow into your mouth. Step Three - Begin Whitening Your Smile Begin Whitening Your Smile – Brush your teeth prior to placing the tray in your mouth. The ingredients in WHITE gel are most effective with clean teeth. Position the tray in your mouth and press gently so that the gel covers the entire surface of your teeth. For best results, wear your dental tray for 2-3 hours. Treatment time should not exceed 4 hours. You should notice your teeth whitening within 1 week of use. Precautions W A R N I N G: Use only as directed. Keep out of children’s reach. This product’s safety has not been determined. Do not exceed 600 hours of use. Store at room temperature; direct sunlight and excessive heat may destroy the tray. Refrain from smoking and drinking acidic drinks during treatment. Not for use by women who are pregnant. Do not use this product if you have gum problems, cavities, sensitive gums/teeth, receding gums, intestinal problems (ulcers or colitis) cankers sores or oral infection. If you experience headaches or head/neck muscle sensitivity, stop using WHITE and consult your dentist. If you are allergic to the ingredients in WHITE or if discomfort or irritation occurs, discontinue use. Consult your dentist or physician. Our single purpose is to achieve your healthiest and most naturally brilliant smile. BriteSmile improves whiteness better than any other treatment available. In fact, we often see over fourteen shades of improvement. And the results last for years Tooth whitening has become very popular in the last few years for a very simple reason. Just about everyone would like to have whiter teeth and a new technique was discovered a few years ago that makes it possible! Like most great discoveries, it was discovered by accident! This new technique of’Home Tooth Whitening was discovered in the 1960’s by an orthodontist in Little Rock, Arkansas. One of his patients had a sore on his gums and he treated it by placing an oral medicated gel called "Gly-oxide" in an orthodontic positioner (that covered the teeth). To his surprise, the Gly-oxide caused his patient’s teeth to become whiter! He then began to offer this service to his other patients. Gradually this technique was shared by word of mouth among dentists until a dentist at the University of North Carolina Dental School published a paper about it in a 1989 dental journal. In the last ten years Home Bleaching has taken off like a rocket! Also during these last 10 years the technique has been developed and refined until it has become consistent and effective in it’s results. There are two primary aspects to home tooth whitening. The first is the active ingredient - Carbamide Peroxide ("CP" for short). That is what the Gly-oxide had in it that made it work. All home tooth whitening gels have this sonic active ingredient; the only significant differences are in acidity, gel thickness, and concentration of CP. CP is actually a very mild bleaching agent (that is why it is safe to use in the mouth) and because it is so mild, it tines not work very well unless it is held intimately to the tooth surface for hours at a time. Therefore the second key aspect to home tooth whitening is the use of comfortable, custom made trays. We custom fit the tray to your teeth out of very soft, thin material that is very comfortable and can be worn for many hours at a time. Are there problems with Home Tooth Whitening? As is true with every dental procedure, there are potential problems that have to be considered. Here are two areas that should be mentioned. 1) The most common complaint is tooth sensitivity. Some of our patients notice temporary tooth sensitivity immediately after the trays are removed and it normally goes away within a few hours. The problem is normally solved by using a milder strength of whitening gel and/or using a fluoride gel in between whitening treatments. 2) There can be problems with existing white fillings in your front teeth. When you whiten your teeth, old fillings and porcelain crowns do not whiten. These older restorations can then appear too dark or yellow compared to your whitened teeth. Also whitening can accelerate the natural aging process of white ("composite") fillings. If older white restorations are defective and need to be replaced, we normally do so after the teeth have been whitened so that they can match perfectly. These problems are usually easily solvable but you can see why it is important that you have your tooth whitening done by a quality dental office that you can trust. You can purchase from Direct White the same professional teeth whitening service we sell to cosmetic dentistry offices. No dentist visit, same dramatic results-bright, white teeth in as little as 4 days - and you get to keep the dentist's profit! Don't be fooled by teeth whitening products that claim to be the same as the dentist's yet don't include custom bleaching trays manufactured by dental technicians to fit your teeth exactly. You will find that our tooth whitening system with lab-produced bleaching trays and high-intensity 22% and 35% bleaching gel is dramatically more effective. It is faster, safer, more comfortable, and your total dollars spent will be less. Today's special--FREE shipping on most items. Why Teeth Get Dark There are many causes. The most common include genetics, aging, consumption of staining substances (smoking, coffee, tea, colas), tetracycline (antibiotic) staining, excessive fluoride, and old fillings. Whitening toothpaste can remove stain that is on the outside of the teeth. Dentists call this extrinsic staining. However, whitening toothpaste and professional dental cleanings will not change the color or intrinsic staining of the teeth. That is why tooth whitening (sometimes called tooth bleaching) is so popular. "I recently received my order of the 22% Carbamide Peroxide Teeth Whitening Gel and have not finished the first syringe yet, but have seen my teeth get noticeably Whiter. There is such a difference between your product and the " 15% OPALESCENCE tooth whitening gel" that I received from my dentist, just 3 weeks prior. I used that gel for almost 2 weeks and did not notice any difference, and sleeping with the trays was a pain and inconvenient, compared to the hour I spend with your product." Thanks again for a great product. Thomas DelleDonne RN 4/20/2005 Here's How Teeth Whitening Works A whitening gel is placed in a tray that fits over your teeth. As the active ingredient in the gel, carbamide peroxide, is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and bleaches the colored substances. The structure of the tooth is not changed; only the tooth is made lighter and whiter. Fillings, Crowns, and Bonding will not lighten. "I LOVE this product! It works even though I have tetracycline staining, and I use it periodically to take care of the daily coffee and tea staining I have. If I had to pay my dentist's prices for my bleach, I would have had to put up with yellow teeth!Thank you. -- Fredrick W. 12/06/2003" How Safe is This? Dentists have known for years that tray whitening or bleaching is a fast, safe and predictable way to whiten teeth 2-5 shades in a matter of days. To see what the American Dental Association says about the safety of tooth whitening click here. Most dentists charge between $400 and $500 dollars for this treatment and it is worth it. Chances are you know someone who has whitened their teeth and gotten great results. For many people who want white teeth, several hundred dollars is out of their budget. The cost for treatment is so high because dentists have to pay their employees, office rent, lab, expensive equipment payments, the cost of the whitening products and still try to make a profit. That's where we come in. We sell directly on the web and ship to our own dental lab. The result is dental office effective whitening at about a 70% savings over dental office pricing. We are so sure you will love our products and recommend them to your friends that we offer a 100% results satisfaction Guarantee. If during or after using our products you are not satisfied with your results in any way return your kit for a no questions asked refund. Since offering this guarantee over two years ago we have had less than 2% of customers request a refund. In fact our average customer refers 2-3 friends and family members to us! Take a look at a few letters we have received! What is the difference between laser whitening and custom mouthpieces?. Laser is done by a dentist who applies a 35% Hydrogen Peroxide solution on your teeth. Once this solution is on, a light is held a couple of inches away from your teeth to speed up the chemical reaction of the Hydrogen Peroxide. Many dentist advertise that this works better than tray type whitening. That has not been our experience. There is NO clinical data to indicate the laser whitening works any better than tray whitening. NONE! This procedure costs $500 plus. The problem with this procedure is that after a year of your normal eating habits (drinking coke, tea, coffee, etc.) your teeth become slightly discolored again and develops a new stain. With the laser whitening, you will have to go and pay $500 plus to have white teeth again. With the custom mouthpieces, you already have the custom mouthpieces that you can wear a year later for a night to take off the new stain at no cost. "I think that this is a great product, and all my friends use it to save up to 40% off from a regular dentist!! Way to go"~ John 5/25/2004 How Does This System Compare to Crest Whitestripes? Crest White Stripes are a new plastic strip that is coated with Hydrogen Peroxide and placed across the front teeth. The strips do work...sort of. Tests by Crest show that teeth are lightened an average of 1 to 2 shades (compared with 4-6 shades plus for Ultra-White 22%) They also cause the Mr Ed effect. where the front teeth are whitening and the visible premolars are still dark. In short you will see very limited results with this product. We give you choices. A tooth tray is necessary to hold the whitening gel against your teeth. A custom made tray will be more comfortable, whiten your teeth faster and is identical to treatment received in your dentists office. For those ordering the custom trays, we ship within 24 hours of your order, (excluding the weekend) Your impression material is sent via US Priority Mail. Detailed instructions for obtaining good impressions are included. An impression of your teeth will be made by you with our impression trays. The trays will be returned to our lab a prepaid mailer. We then make and return your custom fit whitening trays. The whitening tray is comfortable enough to wear two hours a day or while you sleep. Most people see results in 2-4 days. Time out for a Truth in Advertising Moment! The custom trays are made identical to those in a dental office. Our tray kit includes clear, easy instructions, however some people (usually less than 5%) just cannot seem to get a clear impression of their teeth. For those people the tray will NOT fit as well as a dentist made tray, although it will fit better than a immediate tray. So for those who want the best possible fit but think you cannot take an accurate mold of your teeth (and you know who you are), :) should have your dentist make your tray. But still buy our gel! Click here to see instructions for taking the teeth impressions. NEW Jan. 2002! Immediate Custom Trays Recent published studies show these trays to be almost as effective as custom trays (at 1/2 the cost). Treatment of patients in our offices have confirmed the effectiveness of this tray. Please see Our Products for more information. How Long will It Last? For most people, the treatment is long-lasting. Exposure to coffee, smoking, red wines, and some medicine products will gradually darken teeth again over time. After an initial treatment, most people do touch-ups one day about every 3-6 months. "I have ordered from Ultra-White.com and was impressed with their website. I was more impressed with their customer philosophy and product. I ordered several tubes of their Ultra-White 22% solution which not only worked great but was half the price of the Dentist I went to! Same exact ingredients. Thanks" Jeff K. 5/29/2004 Ft. Laud., Florida How long will it take and How white will they get? Ultra-White 16% and 22% use Carbamide Peroxide as the whitening agent. When wearing the trays Carbamide Peroxide is slowly broken down to Hydrogen Peroxide which whitens the teeth. The 16% gel whitens more slowly but causes less tooth sensitivity. The 22% gel whitens quickly but can cause temporary sensitivity to temperatures. Both the 16% and 22% gels need to be worn for about 10-14 days to achieve maximum whiteness. Virtually everyone who whitens their teeth will see improvement. The ultimate whiteness will be determined by the length of time the teeth are exposed to the whitening gel and the mineral composition of the teeth. Teeth whitening is kind of like a reverse suntan. Some people get great results in only one or two days while others need more treatment time. Why Choose Our Products? Our system is the same exact product sold by thousands of dentists nationwide. We make the custom trays, exactly the same as a quality dental office does (your trays are made in the dental lab right next to the $500 dollar whitening trays) and we supply you with a high quality, effective whitening gel. Our active ingredients are identical to Nite-white, Opalescence, or other premium brands. But be Careful! Ultra-White has been online since 1997 and is by far the largest and most established teeth whitening site. We tell you who we are where we are located and all our contact information. We include enough gel so that you will get results the first time without having to reorder in a few weeks. Our products are truly effective and we don't make untrue claims. (Rated #1 by Dentists) In short we have been here and will be here for you in the future. Several internet sites are selling a "private labeled" whitening kit found at Eckerd and Walgreen Drug Stores for less than ten dollars for between $39 -$139 dollars. Many use an acidic pre wash that can damage your enamel. Claiming to be a 10%, 16% or even 22% whitening gels is meaningless without strict quality control. All of our products are ISO certified for purity and quality control. As a dentist I have NEVER seen good results using these products. Maybe that's why they aren't guaranteed. tooth whitening tooth whitening chicago tooth whitening los angeles tooth whitening washington dc tooth whitening dallas tooth whitening houston tooth whitening detroit tooth whitening philadelphia tooth whitening new york tooth whitening phoenix tooth whitening atlanta tooth whitening orange county tooth whitening oakland tooth whitening san jose california tooth whitening san diego tooth whitening seattle tooth whitening boston tooth whitening san francisco tooth whitening product opalescence tooth whitening zoom tooth whitening tooth whitening st louis tooth whitening minneapolis tooth whitening fort worth opalescence tooth whitening system tooth whitening riverside tooth whitening pittsburgh tooth whitening sacramento tooth whitening denver tooth whitening baltimore tampa tooth whitening tooth whitening kansas city tooth whitening newark tooth whitening cleveland ohio tooth whitening columbus ohio tooth whitening indianapolis tooth whitening austin laser tooth whitening raleigh tooth whitening tooth whitening orlando tooth whitening cincinnati opalescence tooth whitening gel tooth whitening system home tooth whitening tooth whitening san antonio carolina charlotte north tooth whitening tooth whitening portland oregon tooth whitening bergen tooth whitening las vegas tooth whitening milwaukee miami tooth whitening tooth whitening monmouth new jersey tooth whitening hartford fort lauderdale tooth whitening tooth whitening oklahoma city tooth whitening kit tooth whitening louisville tooth whitening new orleans tooth whitening gel nashville tooth whitening greensboro tooth whitening tooth whitening norfolk virginia tooth whitening omaha tooth whitening grand rapid tooth whitening west palm beach jacksonville florida tooth whitening tooth whitening albany new york tooth whitening tulsa tooth whitening akron ohio tooth whitening dayton tooth whitening richmond tooth whitening rochester new york tooth whitening salt lake city tooth whitening buffalo tooth whitening ventura california carolina greenville south tooth whitening tooth whitening ann arbor tooth whitening birmingham dentist tooth whitening professional tooth whitening best tooth whitening product memphis tennessee tooth whitening california tooth whitening tooth whitening allentown pennsylvania tooth whitening tacoma tooth whitening tucson tooth whitening scranton tooth whitening vallejo tooth whitening des moines tooth whitening albuquerque sarasota tooth whitening tooth whitening review tooth whitening harrisburg pennsylvania tooth whitening tray tooth whitening toledo ohio tooth whitening little rock arkansas tooth whitening wichita best tooth whitening tooth whitening stockton california tooth whitening jersey city new jersey IT'S TRUE! Now having your teeth professionally whitened is only a click away! In today's society, the emphasis on one's appearance is unavoidable. Consumers receive messages on a daily basis regarding products to help them lose weight, change their skin's appearance, or improve the whiteness of their teeth. Tooth whitening in particular has seen a dramatic increase in popularity over the years, due to the reasonable price of the products and the increase in public demand. With the overabundance of consumer choices available, it might prove a challenge to find the best whitening system on the market. The results of a study that compared two similar whitening strips used by teens were published in the March/April 2006 issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal. "There is an intense interest in cosmetics and improved appearance by baby boomers and Generation Xers," says Henry Finger, DDS, FAGD, AGD spokesperson. "Teens especially want to improve their appearance because of peer pressure, publications they read, and their role models." "Whitening is popular to teenagers merely because they are esthetic-conscious," says Kevin Donly, DDS, MS, lead author of the study. Since most clinical studies evaluate the effects of tooth whitening products among adult subjects, this study was an opportunity to examine the effects on a different population. In his report, Dr. Donly studied and compared two groups of teenagers who used whitening strips. One group used a 10 percent hydrogen peroxide whitening strip and the other group used a 6.5 percent hydrogen peroxide strip that had a thicker gel layer. The patients used the strips for 44 consecutive days, for 22 days on the upper teeth followed by 22 days on the lower teeth. Participants in the study used the strips for 30 minutes twice daily. Use of the strips resulted in significant color improvement for yellowness and lightness/brightness. With the whitening strip systems, the most common complaints were tooth sensitivity and oral irritation, both of which subsided at the end of treatment. "To prepare their mouths for whitening, patients should maintain good oral health," adds Dr. Donly. "Brushing right before is not recommended, as it might cause abrasion and sensitivity." What you should know before whitening: * Do not eat or drink anything after whitening that might cause a stain (coffee, tea, etc.). * Existing crowns or fillings will not respond to the whitening agent. * Strips do not whiten entire arches. They only cover the front teeth. * Do not smoke or chew tobacco after using whitening products. * Patients are not advised to use whitening products if they have decay, periodontal disease, or hypersensitivity. * Know the condition of your teeth and oral tissues. A thorough examination and cleaning from a general dentist is recommended before using whitening products. ### The Academy of General Dentistry is a non-profit organization of more than 35,000 general dentists dedicated to staying up-to-date in the profession through continuing education. A general dentist is the primary care provider for patients of all ages and is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management and overall coordination of services related to patient's oral health needs. Although discoloration can be accelerated by tobacco use, coffee, candy, soda or other similar treats, most people begin to notice a natural discoloration once they reach their mid- to late- twenties. A simple smile whitening can result in dramatic improvements in your appearance and overall self-confidence. Smile whitening is extremely convenient – it can be done at home or in an LVI-trained cosmetic dental office. LVI cosmetic dentists offer a number of smile whitening treatments to give you the picture perfect LVI smile. The treatments are extremely comfortable, as well as immediately noticeable. With smile whitening, you can very easily control the results, whether you want a dramatic difference or only slight whitening. Start with your bottom teeth. Apply gel immediately after drying your teeth. Keep your mouth open for 30 seconds to help gel set. Do not apply multiple coats. Reapplication may remove the previous layer. An uneven application of gel will not affect whitening results. You will know Crest Night Effects is working as you will be able to feel the coating on your teeth from the time it is applied until it is brushed away in the morning. You may sip water after applying the whitening gel, but eating or smoking is not recommended. Swallowing small amounts of the gel is not harmful. To help prevent the gel coating from accumulating on your toothbrush, wipe teeth with a tissue before brushing in the morning. How does Crest® Night Effects™ tooth whitening gel work? Is the Crest Night Effects teeth whitening gel safe for my tooth enamel? What about tooth whitening safety — what happens if I accidentally swallow Crest Night Effects gel? Will Crest Night Effects affect my dental work? Can children use Crest Night Effects? What happens if I skip a night of teeth whitening treatment? Why do I need to brush and dry my teeth? What about tooth sensitivity/gum discomfort? How does Crest Night Effects tooth whitening gel work? Crest Night Effects slowly releases the whitening ingredient to whiten while you sleep in just 14 nights. It works to remove stains and loosen stain causing buildup so when you wake up in the morning, you can simply brush the whitening gel and stains away. Is the Crest Night Effects whitening gel safe for my tooth enamel? Yes. Crest Night Effects releases peroxide, the same enamel-safe ingredient dentists use to whiten teeth. Extensive testing has shown the whitening gel to be safe when used as directed. What about tooth whitening safety — what happens if I accidentally swallow Crest Night Effects whitening gel? Swallowing small amounts of Crest Night Effects whitening gel is not harmful. Will Crest Night Effects affect my dental work? Brushing before application is the best way to remove any accumulated buildup on the surfaces of your teeth. If significant tooth sensitivity or gum discomfort occurs, stop using Crest Night Effects for two or three nights, then resume the whitening regimen. If sensitivity or discomfort persists, discontinue use of Crest Night Effects. Best teeth whitening.Reviews agree that professional tooth whitening treatments are, by far, the quickest and most successful way to brighten up your pearly whites. This can be done at a dentist-supervised whitening center such as BriteSmile or by your own dentist, with a procedure like the Zoom! Chairside Whitening System. This technique uses light therapy to speed up the bleaching action of hydrogen peroxide, lightening teeth up to ten shades in about an hour. While it's the most expensive option, it also lasts the longest, up to a couple of years. A slightly cheaper option (*est. $300 to $600) is an ADA-approved bleaching kit provided by your dentist. These have 10% peroxide and a custom-fitted mouth tray that you can wear at home, either for one to two hours per day or overnight. • Crest Whitestrips (*est. $25) >> Where to buy Best home teeth-whitening kit.Over-the-counter whitening systems are much cheaper, but not nearly as effective or long lasting as professional tooth whitening. Of the various options on the market, Crest Whitestrips earn the highest marks in reviews for convenience and effectiveness, which averages about three shades. One reviewer describes these strips as "little Band-Aids" that you wear on your top and bottom front teeth for 30 minutes twice a day. Crest Whitestrips use 6% peroxide. One drawback is that the strips can cause you to drool, so these are probably best used at home. • Colgate Simply White Night (*est. $15) >> Where to buy Overnight tooth whitener. If you're too busy to spend part of your day waiting for tooth whiteners to work, whitening while you sleep may sound appealing. Colgate Simply White Night is a brush-on whitener that The Wall Street Journal calls one of the easiest to use. Because it's a brush-on formula, it's easier to get in between uneven teeth where a strip might not reach. The gel is absorbed, so there's no need to rinse. Colgate also uses 6% peroxide -- the maximum allowable for over-the-counter tooth whiteners. Teeth whitening has become a booming business. A recent survey by the American Dental Association (ADA) reports that patients ask their dentists about whitening and bleaching their teeth more frequently than any other topic. With a plethora of over-the-counter products claiming to whiten teeth, including strips, pastes, chewing gum, and paint-on liquids resembling Wite-Out, it's hard to know which ones really work. To learn more, we turned to dental experts from the ADA and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). In particular, a single session of the 2005 IADR convention saw the presentation of seven research studies comparing teeth-whitening products in blind and double-blind testing. We found less formal testing at The Wall Street Journal, where editors compare five tooth-whitening products, and at Consumer Reports, where 78 staff members test five over-the-counter tooth-whitening kits. By contrast, we found a couple of Web sites portraying themselves as unbiased review sites for tooth-whitening products, but in fact, have very little substantive information and no testing details. We don't even know who is writing these 'reviews,' since no authors or experts are identified. We tried to contact both TeethWhiteningReview.com and Teeth-Whitening-Guide.com, but we didn't receive a reply from either site. We'd take sites like these more seriously if they recommended or criticized products based on comparative testing, or at least identified the authors. But with just a list of unsupported 'top-rated' teeth whiteners, these two sites are of little or no value when trying to identify the most effective teeth whitening products. Store shelves are filled with so-called teeth-whitening toothpastes (*est. $3 to $7), which usually cost more than regular toothpaste. However, reviews say whitening toothpastes are less than impressive and that you can achieve the same result by brushing for the recommended two minutes with regular toothpaste. This is because peroxide and time are both needed to have a whitening effect on teeth. Many whitening toothpastes only contain abrasives or chemical polishing agents that clean the surface of teeth just like ordinary toothpaste, and those that do contain peroxide aren't in contact with your teeth long enough to have much of an effect. Reviews say you're better off brushing well with ordinary toothpaste and putting those extra dollars towards a true bleaching product. All the reviewers and experts we found agree that professional teeth whitening -- though expensive -- is the most effective and convenient way to brighten your smile. The ADA recommends these methods as well, saying it's preferable to have your tooth-whitening process supervised by a dentist. There are a couple of different options if you choose this route, and your dentist can help you choose the one that's right for you. |
